Let's learn the Samoan Alphabet or Pi Faitau
The Samoan alphabet is one of the shortest in the world, making it especially beginner-friendly. It consists of just 17 letters — 5 vowels and 12 consonants. Learning these letters is one of the easiest and most effective ways to start understanding and pronouncing the Samoan language correctly.
Vowels
-
A - sounds like "ah" (as in father)
-
E - sounds like "eh" (as in bed)
-
I - sounds like "ee" (as in see)
-
O - sounds like "oo" (as in moon)
Consonants:
F ("fah"), G ("ngah"), L ("lah"), M ("moh), N ("noo"), V ("vee"), H ("heh"), K ("kah"), R ("roh")
Bonus Letter: ' Glottal Stop
There’s also a special symbol known as the glottal stop (')— it’s like a little pause or break in sound (similar to the break in "uh-oh"). It’s not an official letter, but it's important in correct pronunciation.
For example, the word ta'u means "tell", but tau means "cost."
