How to Introduce Yourself in Samoan

In Samoan, “fa'afeiloa'i” means to greet someone — but it goes much deeper than a simple “hello.”

The word is made up of two parts:

  • fa‘a” – meaning to be like or in the manner of

  • feiloa‘i” – meaning to meet or to mix with

Together, fa‘afeiloa‘i reflects the idea of mixing with others, showing that a greeting in Samoan culture is more than just words — it’s about connection and shared identity. Whether it's through family lineage, village ties, or shared experiences, there's always a strong desire to find common ground with the person we're greeting.

Basic Steps to Introducing Yourself in Samoan:

  1. Always start with a greeting.  Talofa. (for more greetings click here).
  2. State your name. O lo’u igoa o... (my name is...)
  3. Share a bit about yourself. Ou te sau mai... (I come from)
(This is your opportunity to share a little something to make a connection.

FIAPOKO TIP- Knowing the village of your ancestors is always a good thing).
  4. Add a friendly closing. Fa'afetai (for more ways to say Thank You, click here).

Putting it all together, a complete introduction would be:
